I recently had a frustrating experience at the Albert Heijn in Bijlmer Arena. While I understand and support age verification policies for alcohol sales, the way this policy is enforced here seems completely disconnected from reality. I am 35 years old and clearly look well above the legal drinking age. After finishing work, I stopped by to buy a beer and was asked to present physical identification. I showed a photo of my passport on my phone, which contains all my official information and clearly proves my age, but it was rejected because only the physical document was accepted. This raises an obvious question: who actually carries their physical passport around in 2026? For many people, especially expatriates, carrying a passport daily is inconvenient and creates an unnecessary risk of loss or theft. Digital copies are commonly used for identification purposes in many situations and are often sufficient to establish someone’s age. Age verification exists to prevent underage sales, which is entirely reasonable. However, applying the same rigid standard to someone who is obviously an adult serves no practical purpose. Instead of protecting anyone, it creates unnecessary inconvenience for customers and leaves the impression that common sense has been replaced by blind adherence to procedure. A policy that cannot distinguish between a teenager attempting to buy alcohol and a clearly adult customer presenting an official document copy is not an effective policy it is simply an inflexible one.
